Suspect Caught in the Act
As reported earlier this week, Crowley Police have made several arrests of suspects in vehicle & vending machine burglaries. “Today (5/4/12) we have made another arrest regarding vehicle burglaries. I attribute this arrest to an alert citizen and smart tactical work by our officers on patrol” stated Chief Gibson.
Shortly after 5:00 am, a suspicious person was observed by a citizen on Fairway Drive. This suspect was approaching vehicles in the neighborhood pulling on door handles. The citizen contacted the police department regarding the suspicious circumstances.
As officers arrived in the area, they were able to locate the suspect without being observed. “With the information provided by the alert citizen, our officers were able to locate the suspect as he was attempting to enter a vehicle on Governor Edwards Drive. The suspect attempted to flee from the officers, but was taken into custody after his resistance” stated Chief Gibson.
The investigation into this suspect’s activity this morning has led to his being arrested and charged with 4 counts of burglary of vehicles, 1 count of attempted burglary, resisting arrest and misrepresentation during booking. In addition, Crowley Police released a picture earlier this week taken from a home video system in the 1200 block of South Ave F. This suspect has been identified as the person on the video. He has also been charged with aggravated burglary as well as a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. However, this matter does not end here as the suspect has outstanding warrants from the 15th Judicial District Court and Lafayette Parish.
Arrested for these crimes was Robert Dale Handy, 49 of Crowley. Handy has been booked into the Acadia Parish Jail. Handy has an extensive record which dates back to 1992 for burglary and theft.
“I would like to thank our officers and the alert citizen who helped us with this arrest. It is obvious that Handy has ventured around town and we believe that he is responsible for more burglaries. We will continue to work on clearing these cases. Please do not let your guard down by thinking that he is the only person out doing these crimes” stated Chief Gibson.
